Abstract

As autonomous cars are entering mainstream, new research directions are opening involving several domains, from hardware design to control systems, from energy efficiency to computer vision. An exciting direction of research is represented by the coordination of the different vehicles, moving the focus from the single one to a collective system.

In this talk I propose some challenging examples that show the motivations for a coordination approach in autonomous driving. Moreover, I present some techniques from distributed artificial intelligence that can be exploited to tackle the previously mentioned challenges.

Speaker’s Short Bio

Giacomo Cabri is full professor of Computer Engineering at the Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia in Italy.

He received the Laurea degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Bologna in July 1995. In February 2000 he received the PhD in Information Engineering from the Dipartimento di Scienze dell’Ingegneria (now Dipartimento di Ingegneria Enzo Ferrari) of the Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia with a thesis “Parallel and distributed models for the management of systems”. His affiliation is the Dipartimento di Scienze Fisiche, Informatiche e Matematiche of the Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia.

He teaches different courses in the field of Computer Science and Information Technology, both base ones and advanced ones. Moreover, he teaches a course also for the National Army Academy in Modena.

His research activities are mainly related to the following areas:

  • Autonomic computing and self-organizing systems;
  • Object models, languages and environments;
  • Web applications;
  • Mobile computing.

In these areas, he has published around 150 papers in international and national journals, and in international and national proceedings, and is (and has been) involved in international and national projects. He is member of several program committees of International conferences, he has been general chair of IEEE WETICE 2004, ACM PPPJ 2008, IEEE WETICE 2014.
